MADAME FRAMBOISE We saw Her for the first time a few years ago. I was doing my studies in Paris and we use to get the Metro every morning to go from home to school and back, at least I used to do so before getting my fantastic blue bike. At the stop “le halles”, almost every morning, She entered the Wagon and asked for some silence. She started singing with a fascinating husky voice, and asked, for some pennies or just for a smile. We use to spend time inventing dramatic, silly, romantic stories about this old Lady, I suppose She was about 70 years old, and we always called her “La Dame du Metrò”. Once as usual she arrived and started singing, as usual acting like an old sad star on her irrecoverable way to an never-ending decline, as usual very elegant and eccentric in her way to dress and move. That day She was wearing a fantastic silk blouse, with big red raspberry printed on it, together with an unforgettable hat filled of flowers made out of paper. That image is impressed in my mind like a picture a never took. From that moment She is for me Madame Framboise (Miss Raspberry). Even if I’m not in Paris anymore, and I didn’t see her for years, I continue to invent stories about who she is, who she was before and what she did. Maybe she was a famous french actress, or a German singer escaping from the war, or again a poor girl who hoped to find fortune and fame in Paris, and ended up being a prostitute… Madame Framboise is an everlasting muse, her story always change, nobody knows the truth, everyone can create her past… Someone told me she is still there, at the metro station “Les Halles”, with her amazing flowery-dramatic-eccentric style, singing for the people who are willing to make a smile for her. I didn’t see her, but I don’t need that, I can picture it perfectly.
